EMPOWERING INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Melewka's Commitment to Cultural Respect and Sustainable Partnerships

We acknowledge that the land on which we operate is the traditional and ancestral territory of Indigenous peoples, who have cared for this land for thousands of years. We honor the enduring relationship that Indigenous communities have with the land, and we are grateful for their stewardship.

In particular, we recognize that we are situated within the territories covered by Treaty 7 and Treaty 6. Treaty 7, signed in 1877, is the traditional land of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T'ina Nations. Treaty 6, signed in 1876, is the traditional territory of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, and Assiniboine Nations, as well as the Métis peoples of this region.

We are committed to fostering relationships of respect, understanding, and collaboration with Indigenous communities, and we recognize their ongoing contributions to our society and the broader world.

FOSTERING NDIGENOUS RELATIONS

To achieve this, we have established a Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Commitment with the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB). As part of this commitment, we invest in policies, procedures, and programs that help us achieve full PAR Certification in the future. We also have an Indigenous Relations Working Committee made up of internal team members who develop proactive plans, practices, and policies to establish Melewka as a recognized leader in corporate performance for Indigenous relations.

  • At Melewka Structures & Design, we prioritize promoting Indigenous cultural awareness, education, and respect within our company.
  • We are committed to recruiting, training, mentoring, and retaining Indigenous team members.
  • We support the development and realization of Indigenous community infrastructure needs through project development.
  • Our procurement practices are inclusive and supportive of capacity building with Indigenous community subcontractors and suppliers.
  • We strive to establish long-term Indigenous community partnerships and create sustainable economic development opportunities.

Working For The Community

At Melewka, we are proud to be a part of community development and growth through the projects and local infrastructure we help build. We believe in engaging business practices that benefit all parties involved and leave lasting legacies in the communities we help build.

We are committed to inclusive and supportive procurement practices for capacity building with Indigenous community subcontractors and suppliers, as well as the recruitment, training, mentoring, and retention of Indigenous team members. Our goal is to provide project development support and realization for Indigenous community infrastructure needs, while building long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities and sustainable economic development opportunities.

Melewka has been in ongoing discussions with the Athabasca University to produce a training program that can be implemented with the help of the Nations to educate and ensure a workforce within the Nations. This workforce can help develop future growth and upcoming construction projects. A Development Committee has been formed including the President of Athabasca University and Council members of Tsuut’ina Nation to discuss the process for founding a trade-based program within the Nation and the process for implementation. We believe that if the Nation trains their own members that the projects can mitigate the risk of labor shortages in some of the more rural locations. Train up the youth and give opportunities to stay on the Nation and have gainful employment.
